Frequently asked questions .Some things you want to know! Updated June 16th
2009
If the Snugburner is so good, why doesn't my Aga
dealer sell it?
The Aga dealer has a franchise to sell new products from
the manufacturers. It's in their interests to sell as many NEW cookers as
possible - or loose their franchise! Despite this some of the more successful
dealers do sell conversions, but tend to charge a fortune, relying on their
"approved" status to get away with it. Up to a few years ago the same applied if
you bought a new car - take it to a non franchised agent mate and your warranty
is invalid! This is now illegal under EU law.
We expect the main dealers to slag off our product, despite Aga selling a range
of pressure jet burners in the Diesel Aga and the Rayburn 300 and 400 and 800 series!
In the past conversions could be "knocked up" in a garden shed but now all
serious conversions have to have OFTEC approval -involving months of tests. It
costs a fortune! All our Snugburners have full test documentation, available if
you wish to be bored with graphs, etc - ask Graham for these!
For your information their latest price list says
Aga DC = diesel fired £6325
Aga DCM - diesel 2 oven with module £9050
Aga DE -4 oven cooker £7800
Aga DEM - 4 oven with module £10,525
special additions cost MORE!
What does the conversion cost?
Our full retail price is £1338.11 inc vat for the complete
conversion to suit the Rayburn OF7,OF22 and Deluxe Aga. However we are looking
for a few showhouses and are happy to do a reduction if you are prepared to let the
occasional visitor view (and hear) your installation. We pay a £25 "inconvenience
allowance" if they purchase subsequently but please DON'T think of this as a
"get rich scheme" ! If you get one or two visitors a year that would be normal -
obviously dependant on where you live! We are really keen to get some
installations in West Wales and North Scotland
If you want US to fit the conversions its around
£1950 all in - assuming you don't live too far away!
We want to REDUCE prices as soon as possible but as
the burners are made to fit each type of cooker we won't ever be able to sell
hundreds of one type to fit all - this is a specialised unit and thus won't fit
say, Solid Fuel Rayburns
Is the performance better?
My party trick is to put a measured pint of cold water in a kettle or lidded
saucepan and fire the cooker (Of7 or OF 22).From cold it boils in 15 minutes (4
minutes when cooker hot) and the oven reaches 400F (200C) in around 45 minutes
-at the same time heating the rads and water! Output from the OF22 burner gives
around 35,000 btus to water = 8 rads - so your house WILL BE WARM!
I have heard that the Pressure jet burner is TOO
NOISY to stand in the kitchen. Is that true?
We are very happy to show off our burners but think
its better if you talk to an existing customer rather than us ( we are biased!)
.As time progresses we should have clients all over the Uk but they are limited
to our initial guinea pigs at present! If you want to see / hear one working we
can arrange to see an existing installation but you may have to travel! But
seriously ,we don't think we have noise a problem at around 50 decibels, at
least that's what all existing owners have told us. A working OF7 is in our
works in Wrexham and we have others in Scotland (Dumfries) and Kent. My own 2oven aga (originally gas) can be seen in Newbury - by appointment!
My service engineer is getting too old and I am
worried there isn't anyone out there who will understand my Rayburn. How can I
be sure your burner can be serviced?
We understand this and offer in house servicing if
needs be. Our most distant customer is in Tasmania ! All technical parts of the
burner can be recognised and worked on by any OFTEC oil engineer - its not NEW
technology, just a new application for existing burner design. Note its only 1 service a year
with no loss of performance between them.
My Rayburn is from the early 70's . Surely its too
old to convert now?
The great thing about early Rayburns ( and Agas )
on oil was that the castings were simply modified from solid fuel versions. Thus
they are OVER ENGINEERED to take more stresses. As long as the oven wall and
above the oven is sound on a Rayburn it should be fine to convert. On Agas its
the base of the outer barrel that needs looking it. We can replace any
part in your Aga but refer to us if you think your Rayburn has a bad crack. We can arrange
to survey the cooker, subject to where you live! The worst that can happen to an
original OF22 is the boiler starts leaking- we have new ones for left or right
hand oven cookers at less than £500.
can you really convert my cooker in one day?
Yes ,if its correctly installed. We do need a power point that will be
exclusively for the cooker but you have that already for an oil Aga ( factory
versions OC,OCB or OE) .But you LOOSE that BM control valve that's always been in
the way in the cupboard! The OF7 converts in about 3 hours -no mods to the look
of it except no more "carb" on the side panel! Installed cost is
around £1800
will the cooker run on Bio Fuel?
Technically yes - but we are not selling it for that fuel until the Govt have
decided on a MIX - then we have to do tests to set the burners up properly. Bio
has to be pre heated longer than diesel, the pressure required to atomise it is
higher and thus its less suitable in a small combustion chamber ( ie Aga) that
bigger boilers.
Who can I buy this conversion from?
We aim to sell direct to the public but won't
guarantee the burner unless commissioned by an approved engineer. You may be
better off letting him buy and fit - he will get a
trade discount so he will be pleased to install- it costs you no extra!
Alternatively you may buy from us directly and we may be able to arrange
installation and commissioning but I stress we PREFER to sell to the installer
who will look after your cooker and ensure correct performance.
